Re: [orca-list] Selecting Text in the Terminal

Hi Steve:

Thanks - this definitely rules out MouseKeys as a suspect. I'm still having trouble reproducing the situation though. Are you working with a process in a terminal that might be scrolling information away as you try to select it?

Will

I may not fully under your question but the key pad keys work in other
flat review situations. I mean I can use the review keys to move
around and hear the available text. When I press the slash key,
sometimes I will hear Orca say something like the current line being
selected and when pressing shift-slash, sometimes Orca will say "paste
greyed". The strange thing is this will vary and on rarer occasions,
I might actually get some or most of the desired text to be selected;
if any text gets selected, then I can go into the edit menu and have
available the copy option. Most often however, nothing gets selected
I can't tell which end of the loop isn't working right but I wonder
about beginning the text selection. That part seems to vary the most
as to what Orca might speak. Sometimes, nothing at all is said or
like I said before, part of the text being selected may get spoken.

Sorry to be so vague here. I'm on a remote from work so can't check
this out more precisely right now.

Is this what you were after?

Hi Steve:

The symptoms you describe don't necessarily match what might happen
if MouseKeys is enabled, but that might be a thing to suspect. Do
any of the keypad keys work for you?

No; I just moved on after a while. I'm not sure what to do with the
terminal environment. I just know in the past a while back that that
process seemed to work really well but now I just can't seem to get a
consistent bahavior.

Did you ever resolve this? I followed your instructions at

me.

I'm on a desktop here so the orca+7 key combo on your machine must be
like the keypad_slash key here.

In any case after further messing around with this, I'm seeing even
more inconsistency here. I cannot get consistent behavior at all.
For several times, I could seem to select some text and pressing the
keypad_enter key would speak the selected portion. But around all
this, I never saw the option open up in the edit menu for copying to
clipboard. I know the copy to clipboard works if I choose "Select
all" from the edit menu but the flat review keys just aaren't cutting
this reliably. I sure wish I could figure out what is going on.

Nah, sure broken here<sigh>. I used to be able to use this in
versions past on other distros but haven't done this in quite some
time. I don't have to set anything up in advance, do I? The only
thing I notice now is when I press the slash key to begin the
selection, I usually hear nothing spoken; then when I get
to the end
of the block to select, I press shift slash and I will hear "Paste
grayed shift-control-v." After that, if I go to the edit
menu, there
is no option available to copy the selection. I also have
no selected
text spoken when I press the kp_enter key either.

If this actually works for you, what prompts or text gets
spoken when
you go through these steps? Also, I notice that if I
press slash with
or without the shift enhancement at the end of the
selection block, I
hear that same text I mentioned earlier; it's like no difference so
I'm getting suspicious of the shift slash key combo.

Has anyone been able to select text in a terminal with Orca
lately? What I tried to do was position the flat review cursor
(mouse pointer) over the left most character and press the keypad
slash key to left click it. Then move over to the right most
character and do a shift-slash to complete the selection. At that
point, I would hope to have a selection on the edit menu to copy
the text. Also, if I would press the keypad enter key, I would
expect to hear the selected text. But the key never speaks any
selected text and the copy option is never shown in
the edit menu.
This all makes me think the text selection feature is now broken
in Orca or something changed. I can cut/paste just
fine from other
gnome apps and I can paste previously copied text from any other
gnome app to the terminal and paste with gnome-terminal but I
can't select for copy any text in the terminal with the above
described procedure.

Any thoughts?
