Jason. I can say I share your filings. This is not a place for normal users. You have to be realy dedicated 
to this stuff to finally get to some interesting results. But on the other hand, this way you can be sure 
that if you finally are through all the pain and frustration, you will really know and understand what you 
are doing and why. As a new user I am right now in the named above process. Keep working with orca and 
linux and it will pay back.

Did you read the documentation on the Orca wiki that treats the handling
of system admin tools?
Don't know the link by heart, but I think it's in the FAQs too.
Furthermore:
If you have entered your password, go to a text terminal and type:
sudo killall gksu
That brings speech back.
