yes, jaws works under a VM in workstation. You can install video intercept
in a VM, if the VMware tools is installed. In workstation, you can do this
by going to VM>install VMware tools. The install wizard will pop up on the
windows VM and then everything will work fine.
As for Orca, It just seams to work without a problem in VMware! I've never
known it to crash in VMware. The Only problem I have is on some
distributions (fedora open suse and cent os) The orca speech output is very
crackly and you can't tell what it's saying (anyone know how to fix this?)
Hope this helps.
Ashley

Have you created a windows virtual machine in vmware workstation? I have
yet
to find anyone who can tell me if jaws works in a vm running under vmware
workstation. I can tell you there are serious problems with jaws running
in
a vm with the free product, server2. Essentially, I'd say don't bother.
You
cannot install the video intercept manager and without that component,
jaws
is not even as good as nvda. If you can live with nvda (I hear
window-eyes
works really well too) then server2 is fine.
In fact, I'm not even sure that vmware workstation works with fedora. It
says it works under Red Hat but fedora is not Red Hat.
Anyway, first I have to get orca working. Instead of downloading the DVD
image and reinstalling, I am trying to upgrade to fedora 11.
# preupgrade-cli "Fedora 11 (Leonidas)"
What a strange upgrade syntax. But I'm coming from the debian universe.
Note: I don't mean to trash nvda. I think it's a fantastic piece of
software -- a real testimonial to the open source concept. But even the
developers admit they have a ways to go before they're in the same
ballpark
as the commercial products.

Hi.
Why use fedora 9? Fedora 10 is much better and more stable.
You can find the live CD at:
www.fedoraproject.org
In the download area.
Also, I don't think the fedora images on the speakup site are very good
if
you want a full fedora 9 installation. Use the images from the fedora
website instead.
As for orca, Doing alt+F2 and typing orca, then following the
instructions
normally works. To select the speech engine, press 1 or 2 and then press
enter. The version of orca in fedora 10 is a lot more stable. Fedora is a
great distribution. And VMware workstation is a cool piece of software! I
use the windows version and it's helped me a lot.
Good Luck!

I have a fresh install of fedora 9 installed from the images at the
speakup
modified fedora site. I cannot get orca to work. I can open a
gnome-terminal
window and type 'orca' and it begins to speak. But it asks me to pick a
speech engine and then stops.
I usually use debian linux. I want to give fedora a try so I can try
vmware
workstation. But I am not too knowledgable about fedora. I think I have
managed to update my system. Saying 'yum update' downloaded 60+Mb of
stuff
the first time and said it had nothing to do when I ran it again. So I
think
I have an up to date fedora 9 system.
