Re: [orca-list] Orca and the shutdown/logout dialogues

I just took a look at my ~/.xinitrc and the only active line it says gnome-session. A further look at the startx script shows several arguments that can be passed to X and they all appear to be blank; that is, empty quote pairs. Anything else I should look for? I haven't had a chance to review .xserverrc (I think that's it's name) yet.

Hi Alonzo, Steve:

startx with a ~/.xinitrc containing just "gnome-session" on my OpenSolaris box seems to do everything just fine. I'm not sure what we've done on OpenSolaris to get the integration down just right, though.

As much as I'd like to suggest people stick with distributions that are responsible accessibility citizens, understanding what's going on with arch linux would useful. I suspect there may be some gconf setup and/or gnome-session launching issue that needs to be resolved. If the arch linux folks are running into this, then perhaps someone else will, too, and it would be nice to have an idea of the various points of failure.

I looked briefly at the startx command that my system uses; it is a shell script though rather complex in content. Could I simply change some options in there? if so, which? If one wants, I could post it to the list. It is one used in Arch Linux. I have no idea what the startx scripts may look like from other distros. It would be interesting to compare them.

From what you said, does this mean that if someone were to login with GDM instead, he/she would have spoken access to the shutdown and lock screen dialogs?

No. I'm running arch linux and starting it with gdm does not improve accessibility as far as the shutdown dialogs are concerned. Also the botom panel is not accessible and I've not been able to figure out why.I suppose a post would do well in the forums, but I'm not sure if they are good with accessibility.

Hi Steve:

It's been a long time since I've dug into the various ways one can start a desktop session on X Windows. At some point, I probably need to revisit the whole sequence of events because it has changed some in the past year due to various things.

Right now, however, I don't know how to go about making your specific environment work -- you might try asking the Arch Linux folks for help since they should be well versed in how things are started on their distribution.

How might one figure this out? I'm personally using Arch Linux and I
believe an observation of similar behavior was done with a Debian
system. I start gnome with startx from a native console. I guess I
could begin by looking at what the startx command does; but if it is a
compiled program, then I wouldn't be sure where to look next without
litterally taring down the source code to gnome and its components and
that is verry daunting indeed.

Hi All:

My memory on this is a little hazy, but I think it might have to do
with how gnome-session is started. If I recall correctly (I might
very well be wrong), the logout dialogs are now presented by
gnome-session, so it needs to be started with accessibility enabled
and with knowledge of the D-Bus session.

I unfortunately don't remember what was done to fix this for
OpenSolaris and Ubuntu, though.

I'm replying basically to get your comment to the list since your
message only came to me directly. I don't have any further comment on
this right now.

Hi,
Since many of us seem to be experienceing the same issue, I

Orca is receiving?
I speak from a standpoint of limited knowledge here.

Yes! This is the thing I was writing about several times in the past
couple weeks. This is what I've been talking about. This same
problem also aflicts the screen saver / lock feature. Try locking the screen and see what you get. You'll get silence. This used to work
for some time but after going with Arch and latest git builds, no
more. I think when the logout/shutdown dialog starts talking again,
the screen lock will talk again too. It is probably all realated.
I'm just trying to figure out why/how this feature stopped working.

Yes, I get the same thing, also using arch. I haven't bothered
looking into it as its simpler just to shutdown from a terminal.
the problem also occurs if you try to log out from a Gnome session after starting it with startx from a console. Once logged out, you are returned to
the console from which X was invoked.

This used to work fine prior to the upgrade to Gnome 2.26. I am using Gnome as
packaged by Debian.
