Hi Hermann:

- Why isn't it possible to increase Orca's responsiveness in braille?
When I perform any action using my braille display (Alva Satellite 544),
I have to wait a few seconds till I see a result? And when the screen has
a lot of content, this amount of seconds rises, so in Thunderbird with a
large inbox.

Is the particular use case you have a specific page in Firefox? Is it
solely in Thunderbird? Is it when you're doing flat review commands,
or does it happen when you also press the up/down arrows on the
keyboard?

With keyboard no. The flat review tends to react a little slow, but once
invoked, it is usable with the keyboard and speech.
The slowest reaction I see on the braille display when using its
keys. It's not program specific, but it seems to depend on the amount of
text/objects shown on the screen.
For example: Braille reacts pretty fast on the desktop and very
sluggish, for example, in Thunderbird when in a list of many mails.

- Why is it not possible to use the line-left line-right commands of my
display to scroll the screen, so for example in FF, where I have to use
line-up line-down to scroll one line for/back and then line-left
line-right to read the second part of the current line?

Can you try bringing up a large document in gedit and seeing if the
behavior provided there is what you are looking for? If so, we can
try to put that in Firefox.

OK, I'll try it.

- I set up braille to show dots 7 and 8 when text is selected. This does
not work reliable, so in Thunderbird, where I cannot use braille to
check what text I've selected. The same with links in FF, although I
activated dots 7-8 to indicate focused links.

I'll take a look at that.

Finally: Is it possible to use Orca with braille only? This is necessary
when working in a group, where speech might be disturbing.

You can certainly disable speech, but some things (as I'm sure you
know) will not be presented.

The goal should be to make Orca fully usable with braille only, so that
it can compete with the Windows screen readers.
