In the directory where you unpacked thunderbird there should be a file
named thunderbird just run that. On my system I unpacked thunderbird to
/thunderbird so for an absolute execution path I run:
/thunderbird/thunderbird
If it still fails to load, may be try launching it in a gnome-terminal,
does anything get output to the terminal?

all i seem to be able to find are things like shell scripts. there
was a thunderbirdddexe as a binary but entering on it seemed to have
no effect.
