I had no idea so much went on behind the scenes, so to speak. I had
heard about Merkader at one time but never saw anything come to
pass from my perspective. I think gnopernicus was the first real
progress I had heard about on linux and that even came to a hault and
now Orca seems to be on a roll and I hopeit stays that way. I guess
the a11y movement had to build up one big head of steam to get
anything rolling at all. I'm thankful it's been done.

Although I never had a chance to use Outspoken, I remember reading in 1989 or
thereabouts that Outspoken for Macintosh had received favourable reviews from
users, and that it was gaining an excellent reputation.

The cooperation within the community surrounding ATSPI and Orca, including all
of the applications (Gnome, OO.O, Mozilla, Java, etc.) that support it
directly or indirectly, is very encouraging. As long as both users and
developers are satisfied that the cooperation is yielding benefits, that the
quality of access is improving and that the number of bugs in the relevant
components is on the decline, then I think we're in a good position to make
this the most broadly accessible software environment available.
