What is the advantage or disadvantage of running gdm? Is this a "window

gdm is kind of mislabeled. It probably should have been called
the gnome login manager, as it accepts the user's name and password and
runs an Gnome X session for them. It provides a graphical login screen
so as not to scare off the M$ Mouseketeers by a text console. <snickers>
