Hello,

this behaviour has nothing to do with which braille display one is using
i think. I have a papenmeier (braillex el 40 s) and also a alva one. And
the behaviour is the same on both of them...

It depends on the size not the type/make of the display. As I understand
it, orca will put the application and control information first on a
braille display if the display can fit all information on the display,
otherwise it puts the menu item name first if the display isn't big
enough. Should you have an 80 cell display this probably still can
occur, but it is less likely as the display is so much bigger.

That is how I remember braille being described before on this list, and
it fits with what I am observing.

That cursor routing down't work in eclipse might be a problem with java
/ swt apps. Java applications are a special case on which somme work has
to be done, as Will said in a previous mail..

Michael,

What kind of brailledisplay are you using?

At the moment I am using an Alva satellite 544traveller, but I will be
starting some work soon and as there is funding for specialist equipment
available for me and the Alva is my own personal display I will be
looking at the papenmeier displays for work.

The 44 cell size shows some of the problems I have with orca and its
braille support (eg. when going through a menu, if there is space on the
display it puts the application and control information on the left and
then the name of the menu item, but if it doesn't fit then it puts it
the other way round, so I can't keep my hand in one place on the display
whilst moving through a menu and quickly know which item I am on from
the braille as the menu items name moves about). There are times when
the braille display support doesn't seem to behave in a consistant
manner (eg. cursor routing works in the editor for emails of evolution,
but doesn't in the code editor of eclipse, I would expect both to behave
the same). I would be tempted to say that the orca braille part needs
some serious work done on it to bring it to the standard of some other
systems.
