Well, I don't mind editting files.  Hey, that's gotta be a lot easier
than trying to run gnome without speech.  To eventually get orca
running, do you have to enable sounds also or is that just for media
sounds like startup events?

for editting files, which ones should I look for?

Gdmsetup is a GUI app, so you will need Gnome working in order to use it.
