Since SIP is an open, standard protocol, not a closed, proprietary one, the
latter is the way to go.

Try linphone for example, either the Gnome version or the console version.
Also, there's a new open protocol available called Jingle, based on Jabber. It
was developed originally by Google, and apparently Pidgin may implement it at
some point. When that happens, you should be able to make voice calls via
Pidgin, which will also be compatible with Google's interactive messaging
service. However, it won't be restricted to Google's service, as Jingle is an
open, documented protocol, not a closed proprietary one such as skype.

Let's make Orca work very reliably with SIP clients as well as Jabber and
Jingle clients.

Under Linux you also have the advantage of being able to run the Asterisk
telephony system, which is excellent, and highly accessible via braille or
speech as it works entirely at the console level. This list isn't the place to
discuss it, but if you're interested I would recommend reading a book entitled
"Asterisk: the Future of Telephony", which will provide a comprehensive
tutorial, and a good overview of what can be accomplished. There are several
Asterisk and VoIP experts on this mailing list, who know much more about it
than I do.
