SD is part of settings.py. But when I remove
/usr/bin/speechd-synthesis-driver
there's no SD option anymore in the Orca settings dialog.
So I guess you need both, the backend and the driver, or, in other words, 
there is no difference between using SD and Orca with the backend or the 
driver.
In the end: SD problems persist. What a hack!
