This means that Speech Dispatcher is not running (most likely because it
crashed).
I restarted Orca some way (can't remember how), opened the
preferences dialog box and saw that it was impossible to choose
speech dispatcher as synthesis system.
Yes, you must first restart Speech Dispatcher (in Debian or Ubuntu run
/etc/init.d/speech-dispatcher restart). You even don't need to restart
Orca, just restart SD and you get the speech back immediately.
If that crash happens again, can you please send a bug report to Speech
Dispatcher mailing list? See http://www.freebsoft.org/speechd for more
info. If you send SD logs from the time of the crash, it can help.
There is currently one known issue with dual-core machines. Could that
be your case?
