Dear friends,
Did any one of you use Vmware to run linux / open solaris developer or
open solaris community addition?
If any uses vmware with unix or solaris please share your experiences.
How far one can use Orca?
With best regards.

Hi,
Brltty svn (today)
And orca from svn.
After starting orca with braille the python process eats a lot of cpu
power.
top shows %cpu 99.
Can someone confirm this?
Thanks
Halim

OK, so now I have gone and moved my subscription to this Gmail account.
I was somehow able to enable pop access in order to integrate Gmail into
Evolution. Luckily I was able to access the settings link directly from
the Google ``My account'' page and then I used the little vision I have
to increase the text size as large as it would go and click with the
physical mouse on Forwarding and Pop. I then had to tab backward through
all the links to get to the pop settings, because the forwarding
settings were crashing the latest FireFox. I have sent a message to the
Gmail developers to implement settings from basic HTML view, but I'm not
really expecting a response. Hopefully the Orca and FireFox developers
can figure out why Gmail isn't readable from the flat review navigation
after I have logged in. It comes and goes on the signin page, but it's
always unreadable after login.
Live long and prosper,
Lorenzo

Hi all,
Could you all sumarize for me what your problems have been so far so that I
don't have to re-invent the wheel or bang my
head against the same walls? <grin> My idea basically is to allow the user
to access the preferences menu on the
braille display, and toggle contracted braille, cursor style/presentation
from there instead of trying to make orca do
it. It makes sense to me to let brltty do all the grunt work so that orca
can fulfill its goal of blending seemlessly
with other assistive technologies. As of now, pressing the key combination
for the preferences menu lets me have that
menu for a few seconds, then I am returned to whatever the current app
happens to be. I would like to have orca simply
do nothing when it sees the brlprefmenu command. Have you all tried this?
Cheers,
Josh

hi listers.
I am mohammed al-shar' from Jordan in the middle east. I am very new to
linux and orca, and obviously my background is microsoft operating system
and its based screen readers. well, actually I get to deal with linux when I
administer our business VPS account so I know afew basics.
I haven't gone anywhere in orca, other than downloading ubuntu-6.10 "the
live cd". I am not sure yet, but it looks the sound cards on both machines
are not supported, I couldn't get orca to speak when I boot from that cd. I
tried to skim through the wicky but couldn't find any beginner info on orca.
I would appreciate any advice on how to properly start with linux and orca.
some of my questions would of course be:
1. which linux version is right for me to get me started?
2. where can I obtain an easier form of documentation?
3. what if I don't have an external synth or braille display?
appreciate your answers. may be then we could write a page in the wicky to
people like myself?
best regards,
Mohammed al-shar'

Hi Halim,
same brltty and Orca, but about 66,6% CPU for user and about 33,3% for
the system, whatever that means.
There are some more figures showing 0,0% but I don't know what the
letters after the figures mean.
Question to the hardware experts: Are this propper values?

Hello Mohammed,
do you hear the startup sound of Ubuntu? If not, there's something wrong
with your sound device.
Did you visit:
http://live.gnome.org/Orca
Orca doesn't start with Ubuntu; you must set it up before it works.
Press Control+Alt+F1 to open a text console. Type:
orca
You will hear a spoken setup asking you some questions. Answer them, and
when finished:
Press Alt+Control+F7 to switch to the graphical terminal. Press Alt
+Control+Backspace to log out and in again.
When you've heard the startup music, press Alt+F2 and type:
orca
If everything worked right, you now can use Orca.
Regards
Hermann

Hi,
Reading this bug from Beth:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-orca/+bug/95977
I'd like us to work out some guidelines for running test software (or
for someone to point me at some if we have them).
I that particular case she was running a standard Edgy install with CVS
Orca. Upgrading to Feist following the standard procedure failed on the
Orca step, predictably. What is the optimal way of doing this?
On a related note we will post some Firefox 3 .debs in a few days for
testing as well.
Henrik

hi hermann,
thank you very much. well, I actually burned the image I got once again and
it worked on both pcs. I hear orca coming up as soon as it finishes booting.
I don't hear the linux music though, but no worries as long as orca is
speaking. I notice that it can be slower due to the fact that it has to load
things from the cd when you open programs or so. I guess it's natural.
now where to go next? I tried to browse the net but firefox doesn't speak
the same way it does under windows with its screen readers. is there
anything I should do to get it to work? by the way, can I configure the pc
now to use my wireless internet connection? any clues where to go to do
this?
I would like to know also the best linux distribution that you think I
should consider to use when I decide to install linux on my pc not just use
it out of the live cd? by best I mean the easiest on me since I don't have
much back ground with linux.
and by the way, since orca worked fine out of the live cd, does this mean
that I will get it to work the same way if I install and that I don't have
to worry about the drivers?
thanks for your help.
regards,
Mohammed al-shar'

Hello Mohammed,
regarding Orca and Firefox, it ain't that simple:
The accessibility features of Orca only work in Firefox 3.0, which is
still a developer version. Furthermore, you need the very latest Orca
which isn't part of either Edgy, or Feisty, the very latest Ubuntu - a
developer version too.
I recommend you to check out the applications you can use locally, such
as Gedit or the Open Office suite.
I don't know much about Wlan, but I think if Ubuntu recognizes your Wlan
adapter, it should work. You find network settings in
system/preferences.
To use Linux with Orca, I think Ubuntu is the best version.
You wrote that you want to use Linux for your business. Which tasks do
you have to complete? Answering this question can help you to figure out
which parts of Linux you should check out more closely.
Regards
Hermann
