For that, click with the right button on nm-applet and select "Edit
Connections...".
Actually the device is unmanaged. By default on Ubuntu/Debian, anything
listed in /etc/network/interfaces is unmanaged by NetworkManager. So if you
have anything there, remove it, restart NM, and now NM should be allowed to
manage the ethernet interface.
