I'd like to add a little plug for this. NetworkManager does spit out tons of output to syslog, but some simpler error messages would be helpful, as well as more easily accessible. Perhaps a "view console" window could be an option (available via right click on applet) which would show output errors. As it is, there's no clue what's wrong when it fails to connect.
