Do this.  Driver works well, its open-source, and very likely will be in-kernel

I second the recommendation.  I recently acquired an IBM ThinkPad T42 with this adapter, and the adapter works great, except that the driver doesn't support monitor/rfmon mode, so you can't use kismet and the like to sniff and troubleshoot wireless networks.  I also ran into trouble getting the driver and firmware image from third-party RPM sites, but stick to the non-RPM files available on the driver website and you should be fine.
