So the same DHCP client works with ifup and not with NM? In that case, it
would be helpful to do a packet trace to see what the two clients are
sending. Try this:
tcpdump -n -v -v -s 1500 -i eth??? -x -h udp port 67
eth?? is the name of the network interface on which you want the dump.
If you don't see anything obvious in the dumps, I can take a look at them.
I'd guess it's a difference in the hostname option, the client identifier, or
something like that.
