Ideally, the categorization should be an option of the icon view, just
like the "Text beside icons" option.
See for example KDE4 Dolphin. It provides tree view: Icons, Details (aka
List in Nautilus) and Columns (like the OSX Finder). When in icon view
you can activate the checkbox View->View in Groups and icons will be
grouped together (with a bold header as separator). Note that the
grouping is based on current sorting order, so if your current sorting
order is by name, then you'll have the group "A" including all files
with filename starting for "A", group "B" and so on; if your sorting
order is date, then files will be grouped (in dolphin) by month, and so
on.
Take a look at this video http://media.ereslibre.es/2007/09/dolphin.ogg
it seems really useful (I still have to find some time to play with it).
Maybe our brave "Captain, my captain" Alex will implement it in 2.24,
after the fatiguing GnomeVFS->GIO port :-)
