Yeah, i think it will have to be some form of feathered gradient. The
very sharp rectangular corners where some text/icon is partially
overlapped looks very strange.

Seems like a fun thing to do with cairo. Also, if you want to do that
you should probably take a look at doing
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=380060 at the same time, since
they are quite related.
