Maybe thumbnails should never be saved with frames and every application

The thumbnails are saved without frames in current versions of nautilus.
Try replacing /usr/share/pixmaps/thumbnail_frame.png.
I tried to replace thumbnail_frame.png with my own image, but without
success. I am unable to make the thumbnails use the white borders.
How does this work exactly?
