No idea, I tested it with automake 1.9, but I remember seeing it before
when I still had automake 1.4 (I think, it's the standard version on
ubuntu breezy it seems).

I do know that this issue is in the official documentation, so if we can
find it in the automake 1.4 docs, it's likely safe to apply the fix.
