Also, there's bug 749323
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749323) with a request
similar to your other query about distinction between the textview
and the middle sections. As I've said, that was kind of the design,
but in 3.15.x I may look at improving this with some new custom
drawing fun.

I do have a gray area in the gutter between the two panes (which I
really like).  I'll have to check to see if there's an extra blank
white column.  I agree with john: I really like to being able to tell
where the edges of a text area are.  Having things appear to be
"artifically indented" by an extra column would be a bit confusing at
times.

I guess I've been using emacs for too many decades. It's tough getting
old. :)
