This is because you are not using the right font. xterm-like terminals
which do no support unicode - I guess Eterm is one of them - expect
that the glyphs for the line drawing characters are found in cells 0-31.

Sure. I just didn't know whether Eterm supports a similiar feature or
not and since I do not have Eterm installed I didn't bother to check.

In any case I think it would be good if Alessandro changed the
font encoding to iso8859 if Eterm is not unicode capable.

That, plus his locale settings (to prevent applications from attempting to use Unicode line-drawing codepoints).
