So, */log/* and */logs/* covers almost all possible situations.
I'm looking forward for a patch correcting this problem.
Already committed. Posted this to mc-devel gnome org
http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/mc/mc/lib/mc.ext.in.diff?r1=1.73.2.5&r2=1.73.2.6
http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/mc/mc/lib/mc.ext.in.diff?r1=1.79&r2=1.80
And also:

By matching for */log/* or */logs/* most .[1-9] files are viewed using
groff. I consider this a good thing. Plus the user can override this,
but not the other way around.
I don't see a way to override this... As I've said before, viewing in
raw mode makes bzip'ed files unreadable.
In the case of man pages/log files they are piped through [bg]zip first.
The earlier patch puts the more generic match for compressed files at
the end.
Leonard.
