I side with Meg and Rosanna on this one.
Honestly, unless you get a lot of press there, or a major press brand covering it, the cost isn't justified. Usually, it will only bring in one day of traffic, and only on the day of the article‘s release. Sometimes it’s not that targeted to be worth it. Reddit and social media generate more targeted traffic and the conversations last longer than what you’d get from one press person covering the event.
With even half the costs of sending a press person, we could do a banner or google ad to get more reach. Press should be able to cover the event without coming to it, if we write our own press release and distribute it to them. Having them attend isn't required for them to write about it.
However, if you feel strongly about exploring this route with the budget, I recommend we: research the traffic of press contacts, the engagement on their articles, and the level of engagement in their social media before deciding which press person to sponsor. I'd be happy to help with that.

Is the travel sponsorship not being handled by the TC?
When I was on the TC, the committee did indeed sponsor press people
and speakers, and prioritised them appropriately.
I asked in the irc channel and the response was that speakers will only be sponsored if they are Keynotes or foundation members.
We should revisit that. Press is going to be an important part of both fundraising and conference popularity going forward. We need people to write about GNOME, GUADEC and LAS going forward. Dissemination of information is key.
I agree with Rosanna here. Last time we had a hard time getting enough talks, and this year it's starting to look like we're facing the same situation. I think we should prioritize speaker sponsorship over press until we're attracting more speaker interest.
Hey Meg - my comments were more along the lines of general strategic direction. Prioritizing speakers is fine, but we should still fund the press going forward... at least one per conference as a general guideline.
