Is it expensive? I've never been to GUADEC, but AFAIK it's not
expensive at all, compared to any other _real_ technical
conference. I mean conferences, not trade shows. Ottawa Linux
Symposium for example, is 150CAD for an early-bird student
registration. This is the complete list:
Early Conference Registration $300.00 2006-03-07
Early Conference Registration - Student (ID Required) $149.00 2006-03-07
Early Conference Registration $350.00 2006-05-01
Early Conference Registration - Student (ID Required) $200.00 2006-05-01
Conference Registration $500.00 2006-07-01
Conference Registration - Student (ID Required) $250.00 2006-07-01
Late Conference Registration $750.00 none
Late Conference Registration - Student (ID Required) $275.00 none
OLS is a high-profile technical 4-day packed conference. Desktop
Developers Conference which is a shorter small 2-day conference
is around $70 for early-bird students. I don't get into more
business and buzzword related conferences, like the Unicode
conference that is like 500USD for early-bird *speakers*, and
goes to above 1000USD...
So, no, GUADEC is not expensive. It's just not a free trade
show. If somebody is hesitant to pay like $50 to attend GUADEC,
I'm not sure it's the best show^wconference for them to go to.
Same thing about accomodation...
