Simple graphical editor - howto?

Hi,

I'm beginner in gtkmm development and I'd like to ask for help. I want 
to make a simple graphical editor that can draw and edit basic graphical 
shapes. I read a documentation for using cairo and I managed to draw 
some objects in a single window (i.e. as it was descibed in example). 
But I don't know, how to draw something on canvas that is placed into 
window that contains menus, toolbars etc. as well.
