Another clue: Daniel Elstner originally had performance problems with
regexxer, but eventually solved them. Regexxer shows lists of files, so
sometimes there are a hell of a lot.

Also, nautilus can now show a lot of items (For instance /dev/) very
quickly. I don't think it has a custom model. Well, maybe that's a ListStore
rather than a TreeStore..
