I didn't want to use a typemap initially because
the abstractions make it hard to debug.
I didn't think of this string converting mess then
but rather to get the basics to work.
I haven't actually createted any typemaps before this, so I can relate
to that...
Have you spottet any breakage caused by my patch? Feels kinda funny to
have the first commit change almost half the files in the project :-)
Not that the changes are all that big.
