Yes, it sniffs each file to determine the file type. If it was simply
displaying a list of filenames it would be quite a bit quicker still.
For example, if I look at a directory containing an a.out I see a
funny blue square as an icon. If I rename it to "aaaargh", the blue
icon stays.
