Probably because Debian 3.0 Woody (released in summer 2002)
consists of 5+ years old software (Linux 2.2, XFree86 4.1,
Gnome 1.4, ...) and to install Gtk+ 2.10 there one
essentialy has to upgrade the system completely (maybe this
is finally a situation where Sergei's scripts could come
handy -- if Gtk+ 2.10 can be built and works with XFree86
4.1, which I would not bet on).

And to upgrade the system completely -- to Sarge (3.1) -- is
also what I strongly recommend.

Jorge: This means you have currently at least *three*
different GLib versions installed at once (Debian's, 2.6.4
and 2.6.6), or some residua of these installations, in other
words a total mess.

Please start by deinstallation of all the libs you compiled
manually (and remove them thoroughly, e.g. a forgotten
glib-2.0.pc can cause a lot of confusion).  Then

(a) Upgrade to Sarge.  Not only because Debian stopped to
release security updates for Woody half a year ago and not
only because you automatically get Gtk+ 2.6 with Sarge.

(b) If you insist on continuing this adventure in Woody,
choose a non-system location (e.g. somewhere in your home),
set up the environment and install everything there
