So, it this feature is being added to avoid other people (such as
GStreamer) from reimplementing it repeatedly, and not because we need it
for GObjects in glib or GTK+, why not just add GObjectFloating?

It would probably be impossible to use that from GtkObject, leading to
code duplication, but that doesn't seem so bad to me.

i don't see the point in adding GObjectFloating if we can suuport
floating references for GObject and make GtkObject work with it
which is something i haven't given up on yet.

breaking GtkObject ABI wrg the floating flag was just one option in my
original proposal, it is what we have now and it aparently introduces
too many problems. so we'll have to look into alternatives now.
