I'm afraid I can't answer that, I have also been working with gtk only
for a week or so.  From the feel of the architecture, it should be
possible to reuse the existing widget, and just add event handlers for
xinput.  The question is, can you find the exact sequence of signals
to send to the widget to emulate a normal mouse click?  Someone else
will have to answer that.
