Hmm, can the nodes be arbitrary widgests and/or canvas items?
Are there docs for GtkTreeModel?  Examples?

I don't have a copy of the original paper (and the online subscription
cost at interscience.wiley.com is out of reach), but I do have a copy
of SlingShot.

A web search revealed quite a few interesting applications, although
the top match at Google was an advertisement for faucets.
