I tested it and it does not solve the problem for me.  I'm puzzled that gThumb seems to be 
running away - reading the disk and consuming memory.  Is there some debug code that I can 
use to see what is going on?

In the case where I moved 140 files from the directory, the thumbnails for the remaining 
598 images load quickly.  After they are loaded, the system monitor shows no CPU usage, 
but 128MB of RAM used.  Thumbnails for all these images are in the thumbnail cache. 
Thumbnails in the cache are typically 20KB each.  What uses all the memory?
