xls command line convertion

Hi to all,
is it possible to convert files using the command line? As if it was a cli tool?
Ex: gnumeric --tocsv file.xls
gnumeric would open the file.xls and save it as file.csv (without ever showing a
window.
can this be done?
if it can't be done yet, is it possible to include such a option in a future
release/nightly tarball?
