It's reasonable to assume that gnumeric is available for just about every

Not every. E.g. Gnoppix (Gnome-Knoppix) does not include Gnumeric in the
distro.

"other" as opposed to what?
Gnumeric is packaged for Debian GNU/Linux, for Mandrake, Red Hat, Connectiva
and other RPM based distributions, and presumably others as well.
A good source of information is http://www.distrowatch.org/
e.g. for Mandrake http://www.distrowatch.org/table.php?distribution=mandrake
Distro Gnumeric Version
Mandrakelinux 1.2.13
Fedora 1.2.12
Knoppix 1.2.6
Debian 1.2.13
SUSE 1.2.8
Slackware 1.2.12
Gentoo 1.2.12
PCLinuxOS --
MEPIS --
Red Hat RHEL3 --
...
FreeBSD 1.0.13
I upgraded Gnumeric to 1.2.13 using Debian sid packages on Knoppix.
