You appear to installing things within garnome. Garnome seems to install 
it's own copy of automake in garnome/bin. Why doesn't that automake show 
up for you?

I faintly recall to have run into similar problems with compiling some 
modules on the way to gnumeric (within debian+garnome). I try to recall 
the details.
