I've got:
libgnomeole2.la
libgnomeole2.so -> libgnomeole2.so.0.0.0
libgnomeole2.so.0 -> libgnomeole2.so.0.0.0
libgnomeole2.so.0.0.0
all of which were created yesterday or today. If I understand how shared
objects are supposed to work in Gnu/Linux systems, this is what I should
have, although I could rename libgnomeole2.so.0.0.0 to libgnomeole2.so and
delete the links, couldn't I?

DO you have a file /usr/local/lib/libgnomeole2.so that was modified
around the time you installed libole2 ?
