I have just added a launcher for gnote to the KDE quicklaunch icons
on the task bar, however this launches into the search window and
it's not instant. Previously gnote was launched once at boot and
was instantly accessible.

How long does it take to start?
About 1/3 sec
It probably takes more than on GNOME, but performance matter. Also,
how many notes do you have?
About 1500

The major regression I see is the missing 'MRU'? list that was in
the context menu, this seemed to "learn" commonly used and recent
notes and more often than not the note I needed was in it, making a
search unnecessary.

Well, that MRU in general is just last modified notes, they should be
visible in search window too.
Yes I found that, but I rarely needed to open the search window previously, now I *always* have to.

A new note was one right click and one left click away, both
adjacent in the bottom right of screen - now I need to start the
application (bottom left of screen) click on the 'new' icon (top of
screen). Not major but still a regression.

It was actually one left click to the main 'Menu' from the taskbar icon, which also had a right click context menu this kept everything in one place.

You can configure a global hot key, that would launch `gnote
- --new-note`, but yeah, that's a bit of mouse movement.

If I have gnote open but minimized it seems that I now have to
search through the task bar to check if it is already running
before I use it again - either that or end up with several
instances running concurrently - ugh!

That should not happen! Gnote is a single instance app, second
instance should not be started! Can you check that?

You are correct, just new windows not more gnote processes.
However if a note is opened from the search list, it now replaces the top level search window and when closed it closes the application, which nullifies the other suggestion of keeping gnote open in another desktop. I don't use multiple desktops so that would be another annoyance anyway.

Thanks for input.

I really find the new version very clunky to use. I just booted into Mageia 4 which has a previous version and it's just so clean and easy by comparison.

I find it hard to believe that gtk has removed all possibility of providing the same functionality as before, however I'm not a programmer so I don't know.

This application is the perfect candidate for a taskbar icon with instant easy access, just like onboard (but that's mono iirc)

Maybe it's time for a gnote-qt ;)
I wonder what tomboy is doing?

I really don't fancy the prospect of finding another notes application and transferring all my notes after using tomboy then gnote for all these years :(

I live in hope,

Cheers,
Barry
