Not the recommended way of doing things. The purpose of plugins is to
install *only* what you need.

Certainly not, you don't seem experienced enough with Linux to do this
and things will be even worse after you recompile yourself if you make a
mistake.

Now, to debug further, what plugin have you selected in the gnomemeeting
preferences for audio?
