You probably should add the image to the gnome-backgrounds module, and
change libgnome to make it the default.

You'll want to change at least the following GConf keys in libgnome:

/desktop/gnome/background/picture_options
set it to "stretched"

/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
set it to "/usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/gnome/nature/filename.png"

where filename.png is the name of the new wallpaper. :)
