If we need space I know where we can find it.
The top bar is already full, the bottom is occupied by notifications (i love the Chat).
The right side needs to stay clean, in case of dual screen.
 
 There are those rare cases where people use three or even more screens, so it's not necessarily free to use. But on the other hand, some may have the second screen above the first one so all it comes down to is allowing the user to move and customize the shell. All cases cannot be satisfied with one model.

So, rest the left side of the screen.
We have wide screens now, I think we can add a little panel, without losing so much space. I have simply stretched  the top panel to the left side. The old sidebar reborn from the ashes.
So what do you think about this:

This looks pritty much like what Mark Shuttleworth has planned out for Ubuntu 10.10's Unity interface. It's meant to be complementary to Gnome Shell: http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/383

Tough your mockup looks much better than the Canonical implementation.
