I know this is the most extreme case (that is likely quite rare) but I can imagine the weather being critically important in places where hurricanes etc. are fairly frequent

I live on a hill in Portland, Oregon.  If it snows it means then it means that I need to get out of work and run home and possibly by some supplies as I will need to get there before a) it might not be possible to get there because snow on a hill is somewhat challenging for my cars b) I make it there but I'll be stuck there for a couple of days.

I'm not always going to have access to the weather man either.  (although I do have access to a picture window because I work near a window)   Case in point, last year, I was sitting htere working and I looked up and there was snow flurries.  *panic*  Worse, weather forecasters did not predict snow that day.  Yikes.. needless to way that lead to a very scary drive up hill (or mountain) watching 4x4s in a ditch on both sides and having to weight before that for several hours because the police closed all the roads home.

So yeah, knowing the weather can be critically important especially if it changes suddenly.

What kind of weather conditions would it be critically important to be
notified about, in your case?  (not as devil's advocate but actually
in your case please)

I agree with you, but I don't really think if something is critically
important it can or should be passively monitored.

Thanks,
