Will it become open-source? And when? Because otherwise I would not propose to integrate it into the Desktop though I am using Ubuntu.
Agreed.

Right now, all of the client side software is open source and the server-side stuff is proprietary. The person I spoke with from Canonical implied that there's a _chance_ that the code will be released in the future, but that they don't currently plan on releasing it.

The protocol is open, so I suppose it's possible to write an alternative server implementation. If someone is going to write online-synchronization code anyway, it makes sense to reuse Canonical's protocol.
