Probably worth keeping in mind application developers as well. At the
moment, individual applications are NOT designed for a global menu. (I
believe there are some subtle differences involved).

I think the biggest strength of MacOS's global menu bar - and the only
thing which makes it desirable in my case - is the
application-specific menu. It has options specific to the application
(as opposed to a particular window of it), like Preferences and Quit.
If you guys manage to implement this well - and that includes
ergonomically - in Gnome Shell, I will be very happy and I think some
of the desire for a global menubar will go away :)
