I haven't used a global menu bar but what I've seen from youtube videos (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PtOzhToq7o&NR=1 ) I have to agree with you - I don't like the idea so much. It doesn't save that much space and like the guy in the video describes it's a bit awkward to select a window and then go to the top of the screen for the menu...
But I like the idea for maximized apps - global menu bar and window name ( which is there already ) on the top panel so you can remove both menu bar and window border ( that part at the top where you can maximize/close the window... I don't know how it's called ). I guess that that would save up some space. And when you'd go to multiple windows at the same time they would be the same as they are now.

"One thing I can't stand is the global menu bar on top. It's terrible to
have to look up to pick something from the menu. It gets silly if your
monitor is a 24 inches like for my iMac. With a dual monitor setting,
the global menu bar thing really becomes stupid and the usability level
drops in the realm of serious frustration."

"I believe the idea of a global menu bar is not good. It is one of the
things I mostly dislike on Mac OS X. What happens if I want to view the
menu bar of each window currently open at the same time? I would have
to activate its window in order for me to see the bar. That is so time
consuming.... I would like to be able to see the menu bar for each
program/window at the same time."
These two quotes, pretty much sum it up for me. Sorry for not explaining earlier. Personally this is one of my biggest gripes with osx. It may seem like a silly thing to complain about, but for some reason it really bugs me.

Could you detail, or link to a detailed explanation of the aspects of the nightmare of the global menu as present in OS X. Perhaps something could be learned from that.
