Also, as you have mentioned before, i do not find laptop_panel device in
lshal output. What does this implicate? Wondering where should i look to
find the problem so that i can try fixing it.

Nice one, thanks. It looks like HAL did not detect your laptop panel
device. How you you change brightness on the command line? Some laptop
hardware you cannot change the brightness automatically due to a
hardware or software constraint.
