No, I understood you. I let my wm do my background, so I'm not sure
about gnome, but I suspect that it's not going to stretch or shrink the
image to fit.
Again, it's an assumption, so someone else feel free to prove me wrong.

Perhaps I did not satte the problem clearly.
The image itself is unchanged. It's just that Gnome doesn't "realize" that
it's virtual workspace has shrunk.
For example I ahve configured the background to be shaded from top to
bottoms. This does nto work corectly now either.
